Bow. The forward part of a ship —often used in plural. (e.g. I’m crossing the boat’s bows).

Stern. The rear of a ship. Opposite to the bow.

Port & Starboard (directional references). The left and right side of a boat when facing the bow.

Gybe. Also spelled jibe. To change a vessel's course when sailing with the wind so that as the stern passes through the eye of the wind the boom swings to the opposite side. (e.g. The wind was so strong, I was forced to jibe the mainsail from one side to the other).

Halyard. Line (rope) used to hoist a sail.

Head. Toilet room.

Lee. The direction toward which the wind blows.

Make fast. To secure a line.

Nautical mile. A distance of 6,076.12 feet or 1,852 meters, which is about 15 percent longer than a statute mile. Equivalent to one minute of latitude on a navigation chart.

Passarelle. The passageway you walk on from the dock to the yacht. Often incorrectly called a gangplank.

Reach. To sail across the wind.

Yaw. To veer off course.
