Things to do on Hamilton Island in winter
Winter on Hamilton Island suits a slower, more deliberate kind of itinerary. You don't need to fill every hour. But when you want to get out and explore, there's no shortage of things to do.
Winter is prime whale watching season in the Whitsundays. Humpback whales migrate through the passage from around June to September, and with our location on Catseye Beach, you have some of the best vantage points on the island. Sightings from the balcony are not unusual. For a closer encounter, our on-site Tour Desk can arrange dedicated whale watching excursions on the water.
Beyond the whales, a winter escape at WAHI suits any mix of activity and rest. Day trips to Whitehaven Beach and the Great Barrier Reef are every bit as spectacular in winter, often with better visibility and calmer conditions. Walks to Passage Peak and One Tree Hill are more comfortable without summer humidity. Pool days, extended lunches at the marina, sunset drinks at the Bommie Deck and an afternoon in the heated spa round out the kind of itinerary that actually restores you.
Popular winter activities from WAHI:
- Whale watching tours and on-water excursions through the Tour Desk
- Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach day trips
- Bushwalking to Passage Peak, One Tree Hill and scenic lookouts
- Snorkelling and swimming off Catseye Beach
- Golf at the Hamilton Island Golf Club
- Kayaking, paddleboarding and watersports
- Pool days, spa sessions and long lunches at the marina
If you're visiting in August, Hamilton Island Race Week adds a festival atmosphere to the island, with sailing regattas, live music, sunset functions and social events on and off the water. It's one of Australia's great island events, and WAHI is the ideal base to enjoy it all.
