Hamilton Island in December

Hamilton Island in December

Once the Christmas crowd heads home, the island exhales. From mid January there's more room around the pool and on the beach, and the last week of the holidays is often the best one. Queensland kids go back on Wednesday 27 January, so a late January trip gives everyone one more proper week of summer.

Best for: Families, friends trips, couples after the rush

Hamilton Island in February

February is the quiet side of summer. The water is at its warmest, the beaches empty out and the pace drops right off. It's wet season, so plan a flexible day or two and watch the afternoon storms from the balcony. Valentine's Day lands on a Sunday this year, which makes a long weekend for two very easy to justify.

Best for: Couples, Group trips, a proper switch-off

What summer on Hamilton Island is like.

Most people staying on Hamilton Island are in a hotel room. WAHI is something different.

Whichever month you pick, summer up here is properly tropical. Days sit around 30°C, the water hovers around 28°C, and the evenings are warm enough to eat outside every night. It's also the wet season, so you'll see the odd afternoon storm roll across the Coral Sea. They tend to arrive loudly, leave quickly and hand the sunshine back.

Stinger season runs roughly from October to May, so ocean swims call for a stinger suit. Most tours supply them, and the pool is always there for an easy dip.

Summer Snapshot:

  • Air temperature: around 30°C by day, mid 20s overnight
  • Water temperature: 27 to 28°C
  • Rain: December is the drier end of summer. January and February bring more afternoon storms, usually short-lived
  • Stingers: wear a stinger suit for ocean swims and snorkelling
  • School holidays: Queensland 12 December to 26 January. NSW and VIC from 18 December
  • Quietest stretch: February, once everyone is back at school
  • Dates to know: Christmas and New Year's Eve, Australia Day (Tuesday 26 January), Valentine's Day (Sunday 14 February)

January and February are the wettest months of the year, averaging around 13 to 14 rainy days each. Most of that rain arrives as heavy afternoon storms that clear quickly, so plenty of days are still sunny. Build in a flexible day or two, and check out our ideas for things to do on Hamilton Island when it's raining.

Cyclone season in Queensland officially runs from November to April. Cyclones affecting Hamilton Island are rare, and most summer days are sunny and hot. It's worth booking with travel insurance and reading our cancellation policy before you go.

For the 2026 and 2027 summer, Queensland school holidays run from Saturday 12 December to Tuesday 26 January. New South Wales and Victoria break up around 18 December and go back in late January or early February. Mid January onwards gets noticeably quieter, and February is the calmest month of summer.
