stinger season on Hamilton Island runs from roughly November to May (sometimes starting in late October), and the wet season peaks from January to March. Both line up with the warmest water of the year, and both are easy to manage with a stinger suit and a flexible plan.

This guide covers what to know about stingers, what the weather does month by month, how cyclone season fits in and how to plan a trip anywhere from October to May.

When Is Stinger Season on Hamilton Island?

What months is stinger season in the Whitsundays?

Roughly November to May. The Queensland Government treats November to May as the higher-risk period, and local operators put the start of the Whitsundays stinger season at late October. Stingers can also turn up outside those months, particularly during northerly winds, so it's sensible to take care in the ocean at any time of year.

Which stingers should you know about?

Two species matter here:

  • Irukandji. Tiny, transparent and about the size of a fingernail, so you won't see one in the water. A sting can feel minor at first, with severe symptoms following anywhere from 5 to 40 minutes later.
  • Box jellyfish. Much bigger, with a box-shaped bell and long tentacles. They're easier to spot, but a sting is a medical emergency.

Box jellyfish and Irukandji in the Whitsundays are the reason stinger suits exist. If someone is stung, Queensland Ambulance Service advice is to call 000 (or alert the crew if you're on a boat), pour vinegar over the sting for at least 30 seconds and keep the person calm until help arrives. Never touch a jellyfish washed up on the sand, as it can still sting.

Can you swim on Hamilton Island during stinger season?

Yes. Plenty of people swim and snorkel all summer, with a few precautions:

  • Wear a full-length stinger suit. It covers you from neck to ankles, and local operators estimate it cuts the chance of a sting by around 75%. No suit removes the risk completely.
  • Hire or bring one. A stinger suit on Hamilton Island costs $5 to hire from Hamilton Island Beach Sports on Catseye Beach.
  • Check your tour. Reef and Whitehaven Beach tours usually supply suits at little or no cost. Confirm when you book.
  • Follow local advice. Hamilton Island recommends a stinger suit at Catseye Beach and advises against swimming at secluded beaches. Read the signs and ask the Beach Sports team about conditions on the day.
  • Use the pools for stinger-free swimming. The resort pools aren't lifeguard supervised, so keep an eye on kids.

When Is the Wet Season on Hamilton Island?

The Hamilton Island wet season (or rainy season) runs through summer, roughly December to April, with the heaviest rain from January to March. The Whitsundays wet season follows the same pattern across the islands. October and November are much drier, and by May the rain is easing off.

Source: Bureau of Meteorology, Hamilton Island Airport (station 033106), averages from 2002 to 2026. Rain days are days with at least 1mm of rain. These are long-term averages, not a forecast.

January gets the most rain by volume, with February close behind. February and March share the most rain days, at just under 14 each. If you want warm weather with the least rain, October and November are the pick.

Does it rain all day in the wet season?

Usually not. A lot of summer rain arrives as afternoon storms that build, pour and clear. But when a tropical low sits off the coast, you can get a few grey, drizzly days in a row.

What works:

  • Do your outdoor plans in the morning.
  • Keep one day in your itinerary free to move things around.
  • Have a rainy day plan ready. Our guide to what to do when it's overcast has plenty of ideas.

How warm is it in the wet season?

Warm. January and February highs sit around 30°C, overnight lows around 25°C and the sea around 28°C. Humidity makes it feel hotter, so plan for shade, water and a break in the middle of the day.

Is Cyclone Season a Reason to Avoid the Whitsundays?

When is cyclone season?

Officially 1 November to 30 April. Cyclones are rare but possible, mostly from January to March when tropical lows form in the Coral Sea. A severe cyclone crossing the Whitsundays is uncommon, though it does happen (Cyclone Debbie in March 2017 is the one most people remember). If a cyclone is likely, the Bureau of Meteorology issues watches and warnings ahead of time, and flights and tours are adjusted. Check the BOM tropical cyclone page before you travel.

When should you avoid the Whitsundays?

There's no month you need to avoid. It comes down to the trade-off you're happy with:

  • May to September: drier and cooler, outside the main stinger season, with whale season from June to October.
  • October and November: warm and mostly dry, at the start of stinger season.
  • December to April: the hottest and wettest months, in full stinger season, and quieter once the school holidays end.

Whichever month you choose, get travel insurance that covers weather disruptions, and read our cancellation policy before you book.

Is February a Good Time to Visit Hamilton Island?

What is Hamilton Island like in February?

Quiet, warm and green. With the school holidays over, Hamilton Island in February is one of the calmest times of year, with fewer people at the pool and around the marina and a slower pace overall. It's a lovely time for couples, and Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday in 2027, so a long weekend away is easy to plan.

The trade-off is rain. February averages 293mm over about 14 rain days, so you'll get wet at some point. If you're happy with that, it's one of the best value times to go.

How do you plan a February trip around the weather?

  • Book Whitehaven Beach and reef trips for the first couple of days, so a cancelled trip can be moved.
  • Do outdoor plans early and keep afternoons loose.
  • Choose accommodation that's comfortable to spend time in when it rains.
  • Read our guide to the best time of year to visit WAHI, and if you're bringing the kids, our family-friendly reef day trips.

Easily. The free island shuttle bus runs from 7am to 11pm daily, leaving from outside resort reception, and WAHI includes a complimentary return airport transfer. Golf buggies are available to hire too, though they're open-sided, so that rain jacket will come in handy. See our Getting Around page for more.
